Urban Heat at COP31: context-specific pathways for EU buildings, 12 November

Martin presents the context-specific emissions pathways work in a shared 60-minute session on cooling and clean air, alongside submissions from Ecuador, India, Ethiopia and China.

Martin presents context-specific life cycle emissions pathways for EU buildings and construction at COP31, in a session of the E4CA programme.

The session

  • Urban Heat: Cooling Strategies and Clean Air
  • Thursday 12 November 2026, 14:00 to 15:00 Antalya time (GMT+3), which is 12:00 in Vienna.
  • Sixty minutes, shared: the programme grouped five submissions that answer the same question from different places, with work from Ecuador, India, Ethiopia and China beside ours.

What we bring to it

Decarbonisation scenarios for the European building stock are usually run at aggregate level, which hides how differently they play out across countries, building types and construction practices. The paper behind this talk, published in Nature Communications with KU Leuven, TU Graz and IIASA, models those differences explicitly, and the pathways that result are not interchangeable.

That is the point worth carrying into a session about cooling and clean air: what works in one country’s stock is not a template for another’s, and a pathway that averages them is a pathway nobody can follow.

The other four contributions and the session's format are being settled between the presenters. This post names the session, the date and our part in it; the programme is the organisers' to publish.
