How we work, and what we offer
Hybrid in Vienna: office days are Tuesday to Thursday, Monday and Friday are home-office days by default, and the office is open all week. Our working language is English. We publish methods, data and code openly wherever licences allow.
All positions are based in Vienna. In 2027 we plan to move our offices to Die HausWirtschaft, Bruno-Marek-Allee 5, 1020 Vienna, in the 2nd district, and we keep our Climate Lab membership afterwards. If you are looking for housing, take the new location into account. Vienna's rental market is competitive, so plan ahead; we help you find housing.
- Coming from abroad. Relocation support, help finding housing, a contribution to German lessons, and career support for partners of mid-career and senior scientists through our research and industry network in Vienna. Moving from the EU or EEA needs no work permit: you register your address and residence after arrival.
- Pay and social security. Salary following the Research collective agreement, paid 14 times a year with summer and winter holiday payments, plus employer social security contributions.
- Time. Five weeks of annual leave plus Austrian public holidays, part-time arrangements, hybrid by default, up to 100 telework days within Austria, paid parental leave, and consultancy leave for research scholars.
- Development. Up to two trainings a year and six days in total, longer by agreement; a framework for career progression; regular performance and development reviews; and international collaboration and exchange for early-career and postdoctoral researchers.
- The building. Die HausWirtschaft is a cooperative house for working, living, leisure and culture, with an active community of small businesses and creatives, fresh organic lunch three times a week, and a low-energy building with its own solar power, by the Freie Mitte park. The Climate Lab membership continues: 24/7 access, meeting and event spaces, community events, and three days a year of coworking at Impact Hubs anywhere in the world.
Every advert states its own extent, contract length and minimum salary. The PDF of each position carries this section in full, along with what we offer and how to find us.
Other ways in
Not everything starts with an advertised position.
- Theses. We co-supervise masters and doctoral work where the topic genuinely overlaps with a live project, so the work has real data behind it and somewhere to land when it is finished. Write with a short description of what you want to work on and roughly when.
- Visiting researchers. Stays of a few weeks to a few months, normally funded by your own institution or a mobility grant. Tell us what you would work on, and we will tell you honestly whether we can give it the attention it deserves.
- Fellowships. If you are applying for a fellowship that needs a host institution, we are open to being one and to writing the proposal with you where the fit is right. Come to us early: the schemes worth winning have long lead times.
For any of these, or to hear about future openings, write to office@riselabs.at.
No open position that fits? Send an unsolicited application to office@riselabs.at with the subject line RISE Talent - [your field]. We review it and may keep your details on file for up to two years.
